How to Design Unique & Best Facebook Cover Photo

Its good to be back on track after couple of busy days. I was busy in my exam preparation, when I got a query on one of my most popular articles "Design Best Facebook Cover Photo-A Photoshop Tutorial. The query was mentioning me a resolution problem, that when you upload the profile image, it doesn't fit with your cover photo to give the perfect and unique look of your Facebook Cover Photo. 

The problem is that Facebook only accepts the "180*180" minimum resolution of your image to be set as your profile image. Using my older tutorial when we change the 125*125 image to 180*180 it appears bigger. When I wrote that tutorial that worked, but after a couple of weeks something gone wrong and the tutorial could not serve your needs. 

Therefore I decided to write a new tutorial, rather than updating the old one. Now without wasting time I should start the tutorial.

How to Design Facebook Cover Photo

Step1

Download the attached Photoshop file, that is a template that you'll need to create your own Facebook Cover Photos. This Photoshop template will ease your half of the work.

Download the attached Photoshop file.

Step 2

Open the Downloaded psd template. Click the Slice tool as shown in the image below.
 

Step 3

Select you Image you want to set as your Facebook Cover Photo. Make sure your photo is not less than 851x352 pixels. Open Cover Image Image in Photoshop and Duplicate Layer on fb cover photo frame by Software Wanted file. as shown below.

Step 4

Now a bit technical part is here.
Adjust Your Image The way so that the portion of your Cover Image that is going to be your Facebook Profile Image Fits into the Profile Image Box, and the portion that you want as Cover Photo fits into Cover Photo Area. As shown in the image below.

Step 5

Now change the opacity of this image layer to 20.
The image will look similar to the following.
Don't worry we will revert the opacity back to 100%

Step 6

Now there is a bit technical part.
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and select the green looking area "The Profile Image Area"
Revert the opacity back to 100
Your Selection should be similar to this.

Step 7

Cut the Selected Portion of your image. (Ctrl+X)
Open new file in Photoshop
Paste the Image in new file and Save as .png "Cover Img.png"
Upload this image to your Facebook Cover Photo
Take a screen shot "Print Screen" of your Facebook Profile page as shown in the image below
Paste the Screen Shot in a Photoshop New File "Cover Photo"

Step 8

Now copy the Cover Img.png and paste it above the Layer 1 in New "Cover Photo" file.
Change the opacity of Pasted image to 25, and Adjust it, the way it completely and exactly covers the "Cover Photo" of your profile screenshot as shown below.

Step 9

Select the Rectangular Marquee tool (M)
Make a selection around the profile image as shown below

Step 10

Change the Opacity Back to 100
Cut the Image and Open new File
Name it "Profile Image"
Paste the Image there and Save as Profile Img.Png
Upload it to your Facebook Profile Image

Designing The Disco Party Poster

Step:1

Create a new Document with Width 864px and Height 1296px and Resolution 72px
Rename the Layer to Background 
Fill the Background Layer with any color Alt+Backspace
Double Click Background layer to open Layer Style Dialogue Box,
Select Gradient Overlay
Set the Left Color Stop to Color #2e0568 and Right Color Stop to Color #000000

Create a new Layer Above Background Layer and Rename it to Spotlight
Select Brush Tool, Air Brush soft rounded corner with Radius 700 px and color #1c5853
Make two spots Left and Right Upper corner

Create a new Layer and name it as Color Overlay
Using the same size Soft Rounded Air Brush make a big spot on left corner with color#1bb3d9
Using Color#06a519 Make another big spot on the right corner of canvas
Double Click to open Layer Style dialogue box, set the general blending Blend Mode to Overlay

Create a new Layer naming it Circle.
Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool make a big circular selection and fill this with color#ffffff (White)
Change the Circle Layer opacity to 20%

Create a new Layer and name this Rings
Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool make another selection a bit smaller than Circle Layer
Fill it with color#ffffff, Keep the selection on and move to Select > Modify > Contract. Set the radius to 10.
This will reduce your selection by 10px. Hit DEL
You'll get a nice ring as shown below.

Using the same technique draw rings as shown in the image below
Select All Layers of Rings and Circle. Merge them as shown, Rename this to Rings

Select the Rings layer and move to Filter > Blur > Lens Blur
Set the radius to 50
Double Click the Circle Layer and change Blending Mode to Overlay and Opacity to 80%

Now Import the Dancing Girl Image into this. Rename layer to Dancing Girl.
Place it as shown in the image. Duplicate the Girl Layer and name it DG Reflection.
Select Move Tool and Flip Vertical the DG Reflection layer image.
Move the DG Reflection Image down the canvas so the bottom of feet of both layers touch each other.

Select the layer Rings and Add a new layer above it.
Rename it to Wind. Using Rectangular Marquee Tool draw a rectangular selection, fill this with color#ffffff

Keeping the Wind layer selected, deselect the path and move to Filter > Stylize > Wind
Press Ctrl+F repeatedly till you get the image similar to shown below.

Now select the Move Tool and Rotate the Wind layer CCW90'

Again move to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates
Place the Wind layer as shown in the image

Change the Blending Mode of Wind Layer to Overlay and set its Opacity to 35%

Duplicate the Dancing Girl Layer.
Select the Dancing Girl Layer and from Layer Style Dialogue Box select Outer Glow.
Set the Color # 0ad1e3 and change the Outer Glow Blend Mode to Overlay

Using the Pen Tool Draw path as shown.

Create a new layer above Dancing Girl Copy layer and name it to Electric Beams
From Brush Tool (B) select Soft round 17 px brush.
Now select Direct Selection Tool (A)
Set the Foreground color to #ffffff
Right Click on the Image and select Stroke Path
Click Ok, right Click on the image select Delete Path

Double Click Electric Beam layer to open Layer Style dialogue box
Select Outer Glow
Set the color#fb0000, Spread 4, Size 38

Using the Pent Tool delete some portions of the Electric Beam Layer to give a Electric Beam swirling effect to image.

On the same layer, select Brush Tool Star 26 Pixel and make some stars close to the electric beams.
Create a new layer above the Electric Beam Layer and name it Stars
Using some more Star brushes make stars on that layer

Download Dancing People Auto Shapes
Create a new layer above Stars
Using the Auto Shapes Tool (U) select different shapes of dancing people.
Fill these with color#000000
From Layer Style dialogue box
Set the General Blending Mode to Overlay and Opacity to 25%

You Can Now Insert Text of your Own Choice and Give Effects what you like

Requirements

In creating this effect you'll need the following Assets

• Adobe Photoshop 
• 45-60 Minutes (for first time only)
• Intermediate Skills but no Expertise are required
• An Image to Edit (Of-course)

Here is the image we will be using in this Tutorial. 

How to Create Interweaving Photo-Strips Effect

For the first time trying this tutorial we recommend you to use the  same Sample Image and replicate our each step.

Step:1

Download Sample Image Here
Ope the Image in Photoshop and crop the area for which you want to apply the Interweaving Effect
Rename the layer to Girl

Step:2

Open the Ruler view and Draw a vertical Guide Line to (1600px in our case) to take out a square in your image.

Step:3

Create a new Layer above the Girl Layer and Rename it to Strips
Select the Strips Layer and make a rectangular Selection by selecting the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M).
Fill it with black foreground color (Alt+Backspace)

Step:4

Now Change the angle of black strip to 45 and place it as its joining the two opposite corners of the box "that we defined by using vertical guideline in step 2".

Step:5

Now duplicate the Strips layer and place it at a certain distance. The distance between these black strips wil be the width of our Interweaving Photo Strips.

Step:6

Repeat the Step:5 several times so that the black Strips Cover the complete Girl Layer.
Select All black Strips Layer and Merge them into one.
Rename the Merged layer to Strips

Step:7

Hide the Strips Layer by clicking at Eye Icon at its side
Duplicate the Girl Layer and also Hide the Original Girl Layer

Step:8

Hide the Strips Layer by clicking on the icon in lower Layer Panel
Select the Girl Copy Layer, Add a layer Mask

Step:9

Now Select the Layer Mask Thumbnail on Girl Copy Layer
Ctrl+Click at Strips Layer
Press Alt+Backspace to fill the mask with black color
You image should be similar to this.

Step:10

Hide the Girl Copy Layer

Unhide the Strips Layer and Select it
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make Selection around the complete canvas
Crop the Layer by moving to Image > Crop

Step:11

Now select the Move Tool (V)
Right Click in the center point of canvas and Click Flip Horizontal
Press Enter

Step:12

Hide the Strips Layer
Now Select and Unhide the layer Girl Copy 2, Select the Layer Mask Thumbnail
Ctrl+Click on Strips Layer  to make the selection
Press Alt+Backspace to fill the Layer Mask with black color
your image will be similar to this.

Step:13

Deselect all selectionNow add a
New Layer Alt+Shift+N below all layers and name this Base layer
 Fill it with Black Color Alt+Backspace
Unhide the layers Girl Copy.
Be sure layers Girl Copy, Girl Copy 2 and Base Layer should be visible.
Your Image will look similar to this one.

Step 14

Now Ctrl+Click on Layer Mask thumbnail of Girl Copy Layer
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Click on Layer Mask Thumbnail of Girl Copy 2 Layer
Your selection will look like this one.

Step:15

Now select Girl Copy layer
Select the Lasso Tool (L) and deselect the alternate selection boxes

Step:16

Select the original layer Girl
Press Ctrl+J to duplicate this
Rename the new layer to Diagonal and place this layer above girl copy layer

Step:17

Now repeat Step:14 & Step:15.
In Step:15 this time deselect the other alternate selection boxes

Step:18

Repeat Step:16
Rename the new layer to Cross
Place it above Girl Copy 2 layer and below Girl Copy Layer

Step:19

Now select the layer Diagonal and right click on it and select Create Clipping Mask
Repeat the same step with Cross layer

Step:20

Now double click on Diagonal Layer to open the Layer Style Dialogue Box
Select Outer Glow, change blend mode Screen to Multiply
Change the color to Black
Set size to 65
Your Image will be similar to this.

Step:21

Right click on layer Diagonal and Copy Layer Style.
Now paste this layer style on layer Cross.
Your Interweaving Photo-Strips Effect is Ready.
